i call shotgun.

someone once told me the term “riding shotgun” had no violent connotation- but i just learned it does.

the term comes from the 1800’s when Wells Fargo used to be an express mailing company like Fedex. whenever their stage coaches carried lots of valuable items, they would hire a skilled gunslinger to sit next to the driver and protect the cargo from raiders. among the usual array of weapons the hired arm might carry, he would of course carry a shotgun.
